What did you buy on eBay for Christmas?

December 29th, 2009

too cute gradndaughter!!

too cute grandaughter!!

So now I can write about what I bought on eBay for Christmas presents since it won’t matter if my gift recipients read it! I got a vintage Star Wars game for Nintendo 64. Under 5$. Bought 2 mini tripods for cameras, 3.99 each. Bought one of those step on pedals that you plug into any outlet and it lights up the Christmas tree (or any electrical stuff) for 5$ free shipping. I wish I had bought more for gifts—I love it!

I also bought a Little Tikes video camera for my grandson that normally costs 75$ and I bought it for 45$. It was new.

I hope a lot of people got nice leather gloves this Christmas that they bought from me! I sold over 40 pair in the last month.

Some ebooks I bought for myself (not all for Christmas though!)…

A neat book about buying and selling thrift store stuff. Very detailed!  CLICK HERE

Second day of the flea market Christmas sale

December 21st, 2009

selling junk at merchants square mall

selling junk at merchants square mall

Well, today was not very good for sales. I think I made about 50$ though but it was really slow! All the snow was gone and the sun was out but it was COLD! It was warm inside the flea market though…we are in a nice big building in an antique and collectibles mall. I sell there every month. The customers came but they were no mobs of poeple like there has been in the past in the winter months. I sold over half of my “junk” though and went home with 4 bins instead of the 9 I came with!

Most of the items I sell there are 50 cents and 1.00 so you know I sell a lot to get over 200$. The customers like it CHEAP! It’s all leftover stuff that I buy at local auctions and doesn’t work for eBay. I had a lot of Christmas stuff that I had been saving for a few months. Then I sold things like 2 old radios, china and pottery, milk bottle caps, old paper, cookbooks, scarves and mittens and hats–sold them ALL! It’s fun–I have a lot of repeat customers who come to see what new bargains I come up with!

It’s snowing and I’m trapped at the flea market!!

December 20th, 2009

Awesome snowstorm we are having here in PA today! It’s a little crazy—some areas (mainly south) are getting 12+ inches and others about 4 inches—we are somewhere in the middle. I set up YESTERDAY for a flea market in Allentown, which is about 20 miles north of me. Well, it started snowing about 7AM here and already had a half-inch on the ground by 8AM when we left our town to get to Allentown. I was worried about the roads and the sale and the fact that no one likes to come out in any kind of bad weather, so why even bother going??

I am glad we went! There was NO snow in Allentown until about 2PM which is when the sale was about over. TONS of people came to the sale at Merchants Square Mall and I made about 200$ so far. The sale goes for another day and the snow is supposed to be over by morning so I am off again! The roads were pretty bad on the way home but my husband was driving and I closed my eyes for a lot of it! I get nervous if he gets too close to the car ahead and I don’t want to keep yelling at him!

We stopped for a late lunch/early dinner at the Emmaus Diner on the way home and there were only a few people there. Some guy in a Honda Civic was doing donuts in the parking lot while we watched out the huge front windows. Great pumpkin cheese cake!

eBay Christmas sales and my 3 FAV finds this week

December 14th, 2009
Some of the grandkids...Merry Christmas!

Some of the grandkids...Merry Christmas!

I hope you’ve been shopping at eBay this Christmas! I buy more and more online each year. I know some people like the crowds at the mall and getting the chance to touch and smell everything before you buy it. But I like to sit in my pj’s at the computer and comparison shop and make my decisions without having to battle the traffic and the weather. I bought most of my son’s presents on eBay and Amazon this year. He wanted vintage video games and such (he’s 26). That was easy on eBay! I got some other electronics for other members of the family for a great discount too. Can’t mention what—I think some of them read this! I did a lot of shopping at Land’s End this year because I could have my girls look through the print catalog at my house and then I ordered online after they made some choices. Easy!

I sold a lot on eBay the last few weeks also. My new Italian leather gloves are a very good sell and I sold quite a few socks for your crocs—still have some of those left. I had about 15 Thomas the tank Engine playmats and now there are only 2 left. My specialty is of course, the vintage items and these sell great at Christmas too. My 3 FAVORITE FINDS this week are:

  1. 1930 Bucknell University Yearbook. Bought it for 1.00 (local auction) and sold for 12.62. It was fun to look through!

FAV FINDS THIS WEEK for eBay–vintage Revere Ware!

December 4th, 2009

ALREADY SOLD vintage Revere Ware

ALREADY SOLD vintage Revere Ware

My favorite finds to sell on eBay this week are vintage Revere Ware pots. Sorry they are all SOLD but I am always on the lookout for more because they are good sellers! I didn’t know this until I found it out by accident a year or so ago. I bought a box lot of items and there was a copper bottom pot in with the other junk I wanted. The pot was marked Revere Ware and I know that new pieces are pretty pricey so I decided to sell it on eBay.

I don’t remember how much that first pot sold for, but I know I was happy! The ones I sold this week were:

10-inch sauce pans 14.89 and 10.50

3-quart pots 16.07 and 10.50

5-quart pot 16.07

I didn’t pay more than 3.00 each for them at the local auction and they all needed to be “cleaned up.”

Isotoner leather gloves for sale until Dec. 7

Last June, I had a set of 6 Revere Ware copper mugs that sold for 46.00. I was really surprised on that sale because when I bought them at the auction, I only had 3 of them. (probably paid about 1.00) Another person at the auction ended up with 3 of them that she didn’t want so she just GAVE them to me so I had a set of 6. Thank you auction friend!

So keep an eye out for Revere Ware at yard sales and thrift stores! If there is a “face” on the bottom of the pan and a number 1801, then the pot was made before 1968 and has a heavier bottom. These are really good ones!

HAPPY HUNTING!

How I found 1000 cookie cutters to sell on eBay

November 27th, 2009

Buffalo cookie cutter

Buffalo cookie cutter

What happens when you have sold items at a flea market for over 40 years and now you are ready to retire? You sell your stock at a local auction! That is what happened to an old timer at the Leesport Farmer’s Market in Leesport, PA. He sold items at his stand for over 40 years and he was ready to retire. I guess you get tired of almost anything after 40 years! I went to the auction.

There were boxes and boxes of little knick-knacks and toys and stuff that had been new about 20 years ago that now could be considered “vintage.” There were matchbox cars and models and wrapping paper and pencils and stuffed animals and dime store jewelry and…… thousands of cookie cutters. This person was especially known for his cookie cutters. Plastic, metal, tin–all shapes and sizes. Most of his original prices were 1.00-3.00 a piece.

dinosaur and fish cookie cutters

So… I bought about 1000 of them myself. My daughter was with me and she bought a few hundred and there was plenty left for others to bid on too. Most of the bidding went for 1.00 – 5.00 a box lot and a box lot contained about 10-30 pieces. This was June 2009 or sometime around there. So I loaded up my van with my treasures, figuring I could sell them by the bag at my local flea market and also bag up the older ones for my antique sales and my antique booth at Zionsville Antiques.

I took 6 bags to the Kutztown Extravaganza in the fall and sold all of them for 5.00 a bag—a nice bargain! I’ve sold about 20 bags at the flea market and antique mall. Then I was in my glory organizing them for eBay. I had groups of animals, Christmas, dinosaurs, big Texas size ones, and little miniature ones. I am down to one bin full that I have left in my garage. They are still selling on eBay and make a great find for your Christmas cookies in all shapes and sizes!

Vintage printed tablecloths. What are they worth and how do I clean them?

November 20th, 2009

for sale in my ebay store

for sale in my ebay store

Lilacs, lily of the valley, PA Dutch girls, farmers, snow scenes, Christmas holly and poinsettias, these are some of the designs you can find on the great old cotton printed tablecloths from the 1950s. I love finding these at the local auctions! My favorites are the bold flowers—the bolder the better!

If I look through the linen boxes before the auction starts, I might find some tablecloths buried on the bottom and I can’t wait to bid and hope no one else has discovered them! Usually they have and I’ll have some people bidding against me. Other times I get lucky and I can get a tablecloth for 1.00 or an entire box of linens for 1.00 that has some tablecloths in it—yeah! It’s gold to me.

Then there’s the condition to think about. It is rare to find a tablecloth that doesn’t have any wears, tears, or stains. The stains can be worked on, especially if they are in a white area. Even the worn and torn ones can be valuable to someone who wants them to make aprons or curtains or purses out of them.

When I list a tablecloth on eBay that has some damage, I put the word “cutter” in the title. Those who are looking for craft projects can find them this way.

I don't have many printed ones left in my store!

I don't have many printed ones left in my store!

Here are some stats as to what they are worth: 123 “vintage printed tablecloths” are listed on eBay at the time I am writing this. I think it is important to use the word “printed” in the title. In the last 30 days, 149 out of 247 listed have been sold. This is a sell through rate of 60%. The highest price was 83.76 for a Wilendur Christmas tablecloth (Wilendur and Vera, and Startex are all good brand names). The average price was 14.91. This info comes from HAMMERTAP (see sidebar for info).

cross stitch on auction until Nov. 26

I have a few tablecloths in my laundry room right now that need to be washed and the stains worked on. They can be soaked in oxyclean for a few hours or a few days to see how much of a stain will come out. Then I use a bleach stick for small areas. If I have to, I will bleach the entire tablecloth but I won’t soak it too long or the fibers could weaken. Not too worry too much though because the cotton these are made out of is pretty tough! Hanging them in the sun to dry also helps the stain.

Who knew? Ugly Christmas sweaters are a good sell on eBay!

November 14th, 2009

Do you  have an ugly Christmas sweater that you don’t wear any more? Yeah, like those ones from the 80’s with the padded shoulders and big designs and sparkles. What, you still have it? Apparently, there are office parties out there with contests for the ugliest Christmas sweater. The best place to find one is on eBay! I just sold one from Eddie Bauer that wasn’t really that ugly but I got 15.50 for it. (above).

This sweater is kind of cute too but I listed it as an “ugly” Christmas sweater. I also have one more listed on eBay right now and they both will be over on Nov. 19. Are these from my closet? No! They came from the same place that my jeans come from that I sell a lot of—the 75 cent bins at the Morgantown, PA Goodwill store. I love that place! I was just there on Thursday and bought 23 items that are worth selling on eBay. Check out the sweaters and some of the jeans at everythingvintagesteph.com.

Fav Finds for the week: Antique catalog, Vintage Hummel figurine, paint by number snow scene

November 9th, 2009

I think I am going to make it 3 favorite finds this time so I can write more detailed stories about them. 5 is too many at one time but I might do 5 again later so the category stays for now!

Bennett brothers catalog

Bennett brothers catalog

1.Bennett Brothers vintage catalog from 1966. This catalog is a little bit like a vintage Sears catalog. These are good sellers on eBay! I got this catalog from my mother-in-law’s attic and it sold for 22.50. Click on the photo to view the auction! My mother-in-law moved to Oklahoma recently and my husband and I cleaned out her house. The house was sold as is so we were only allowed to remove personal property. We spent 2 weekends filling up the van twice with all sorts of vintage stuff. She kept everything—I loved it! Some other items we found: vintage hats and gloves, old books, sports items, lots of Lionel trains and lots of old silver coins stashed away in a file cabinet! Lots of happy hunting!

Hummel Figurine

Hummel Figurine

2. Hummel figurine “Home from Market.” Sold for 42.17. I picked up 2 of these at a local estate sale. They were exactly the same except one had a broken foot! I didn’t see this before I bid and I’m not sure if the auctioneer knew it either because he didn’t mention it. He was selling them for one price each but you had to take the 2 of them. The bid was only 10.00 so I bid and that meant that I was paying 10.00 for one and 10.00 for the other and I had to take both. I was prepared to bid higher but luckily, I had no competition (maybe others knew it was broken—I don’t know!) and got both for 20.00. (The broken one sold for 5.50). Still a good deal!

vintage paint by number

3. Vintage paint-by-number snow scene 1960s. Sold for 14.25. I used to turn my nose up at these “amateur” pieces of art until I learned that there is a very good market for them! This one was a very nice snow scene but the more popular ones are tropical scenes and animals. I got over 40$ a few years ago for a tropical one! I paid 1.00 for this one at a local auction—everyone else was turning their nose up at it! Now I like them!

What is the vintage nun doll worth?

November 5th, 2009

Ok, I only got 7.00 for the vintage nun doll. That was the opening (and closing) bid. It is only a 1.00 or 2.00 more than what I paid for her! Here’s what we wonder now… Did I start the doll at the correct price? If I started her lower, would she have gone for more? If I had started her at 15.00 would she have sold for that? These are ALWAYS the questions that eBay sellers ask themselves and the answer is… you never know! It is good to do research before you price an item but unique items like this are very hard to research. But again, that’s the fun of eBay—you never know what is going to happen!

So… on to the next item!
